First-Time Vihta Experience
New to the ritual? Our First-Time Vihta sessions are the perfect introduction. We provide a fresh birch whisk and guide you through the traditional technique of whisking to stimulate the skin and deepen the heat. It is a sensory experience that defines the true spirit of a Finnish sauna.
Self-guided Vihta Sessions
For the sauna purist, our Self-Guided Vihta sessions allow for the full, traditional use of whisks in a communal setting. These sessions are specifically timed to ensure the stove and humidity (löyly) are perfectly balanced for the whisking ritual.
Finnish Sauna Glossary
Discover a few traditional Finnish sauna terms that explain the ritual, atmosphere, and Nordic wellness traditions behind the authentic Finnish sauna experience on Lake Geneva.
Löyly
The soft steam created when water is poured over hot sauna stones. Löyly is considered the spirit of the Finnish sauna experience.
Kiuas
The sauna heater that warms the stones and produces the heat inside the sauna.
Saunominen
The Finnish word for the act of enjoying a sauna. Saunominen is not just heating up — it refers to the full ritual of sauna rounds, cooling down, resting, and repeating the cycle.
Vihta / Vasta
A bundle of fresh birch branches used in traditional sauna rituals to stimulate circulation and release a natural forest aroma.
Avantouinti (Cold Plunge)
Cooling off between sauna rounds, often in cold water. In Finland this practice is known as avantouinti — winter swimming through an avanto, a hole cut into the ice.
Many guests cool down with a cold plunge directly in Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) between sauna rounds at the lakeside sauna in Anières.

Saunakerta (Sauna Round)
A sauna round is one cycle of the Finnish sauna ritual: spending time in the hot sauna, cooling down with fresh air or a cold plunge, and then resting before repeating the process. Most people enjoy several sauna rounds during a session — Finns often say “vielä yksi saunakerta” (one more round).
These traditional sauna terms come from Finnish sauna culture, where sauna sessions typically include several sauna rounds, cold-water immersion, and rest. At The Finnish Sauna, guests can experience these Nordic sauna traditions directly on the shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), near Geneva and the surrounding communities of the canton of Geneva and Vaud.

Please bring two towels (one to sit on, one to dry with), swimwear, and a water bottle. For the full “hot-to-cold” experience, we recommend flip-flops for the walk between the sauna and the lake.
What makes a Finnish Sauna different from a regular sauna?
A Finnish sauna is different from many modern saunas because it uses water poured over hot stones to create steam known as löyly. Unlike the dry heat often found in gym saunas, this produces a softer, more humid heat that surrounds the body.
The Finnish sauna experience is a ritual of cycles: intense heat, followed by cooling off in fresh air or cold water, and a period of rest.
In Finland, sauna is a central part of everyday life and wellbeing, with millions of saunas across the country and traditions passed down through generations.
At The Finnish Sauna, our locations in Anières and Founex on Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) honour this tradition with high-quality sauna heaters, natural materials, and a direct connection to the refreshing waters of the lake.
What is "Löyly" and can I throw water on the stones?
Yes! At both our Anières (Geneva) and Founex (Vaud) locations, we encourage the authentic Finnish tradition of löyly. This is the steam created by pouring water over the hot sauna stones to increase humidity and heat. We provide buckets and ladles at both sites so you can control the intensity of your session.
Can you swim in Lake Geneva after the sauna?
Yes. Guests can enjoy a cold plunge directly in Lac Léman, an essential part of the traditional Finnish sauna ritual in our Anières and Founex locations.
What are the health benefits of a Finnish Sauna?
Regular sessions in a traditional Finnish sauna can support both physical and mental wellbeing. Research suggests sauna bathing may help circulation, relaxation, and recovery when used regularly.
The traditional hot-to-cold sauna ritual may help:
- Improve circulation
Heat dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow, helping deliver oxygen to muscles and tissues. - Support muscle recovery
Sauna heat helps relax muscles and relieve tension after exercise or a long day. - Promote relaxation and better sleep
The quiet atmosphere and rhythmic löyly help calm the nervous system and reduce stress. - Support cardiovascular health
Large long-term Finnish studies have associated frequent sauna bathing with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. - Support brain health
Some research has also found that frequent sauna use is associated with a lower risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Several long-term studies from Finland have examined these associations, including research from the University of Eastern Finland published in JAMA Internal Medicine and Age and Ageing.

Are there any health contraindications?
Sauna is generally safe for healthy adults, but certain medical conditions may require caution.
If you have heart conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, are pregnant, or have other relevant medical concerns, consult your doctor before using the sauna.
Always stay hydrated, listen to your body, and leave the sauna immediately if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable.
What is a "Vihta" and do I need experience?
A Vihta is a traditional Finnish bundle of birch twigs used to gently whisk the skin, improving circulation and releasing a natural forest aroma. No experience is needed! Our First-Time Vihta sessions in Anières are fully guided and perfect for beginners.
Can I book a private session for a group?
Absolutely. Both our current wood-burning cabin in Anières and our future location in Founex offer private hire for groups, birthdays, or corporate retreats. Select the “Private Hire/Private Booking” option in our booking cards above.
What is the dress code? Do I need a swimsuit?
We follow the traditional European approach to wellness. In all communal and external areas (lakeside/changing areas), a swimsuit is required. Inside the sauna, the choice is yours—you may wear a swimsuit or go without. However, for hygiene reasons, you must always sit on a towel so that no skin touches the wood. Most of our guests choose to wear a swimsuit, but we respect each individual’s preference for an authentic experience.
Can children join the sauna sessions?
We welcome young sauna enthusiasts aged 8 and older when accompanied by an adult. To maintain a relaxing environment for all guests, children must be able to respect the peaceful atmosphere of the cabin.
Safety & Responsibility: * Supervision: Children must be under the constant supervision of a parent or guardian at all times.
-
Liability: Parents/guardians assume full responsibility for the safety and well-being of their children, both inside the sauna and during the lake plunge.
-
Best Practice: For younger guests, we kindly recommend sitting on the lower benches where the temperature is milder and keeping sessions brief.
Private bookings are perfect for families! Private hires allow you to enjoy the space with your younger children in a controlled, personal environment.
What happens if it rains or snows?
We operate in all weather conditions! In fact, there is nothing more authentic than enjoying the heat of a Finnish sauna while watching the rain or snow fall over Lac Léman. Our cabins are fully weatherproof and cozy. We only close in the event of extreme weather warnings (such as Gale Force winds on the lake) that may affect safety. In such rare cases, all affected bookings will be contacted and rescheduled.
How do I access the lake for the cold plunge?
Both locations are situated directly on the shores of Lac Léman. You have access to the water for the traditional “hot-to-cold” recovery cycle that defines the Finnish experience.
Where exactly are the saunas located and where can I park?

Check our booking calendar for specific “Aufguss & Ritual” sessions or ask on site.

Yes.
